Issa Omidvar, who along with his brother Abdollah was among the first Iranian world travelers, passed away on May 9 at the age of 97. On this occasion, Mahdi Gohari, a researcher of travel literature, shared a note with Hamshahri Online
In his note, Gohari writes:
“The late Iraj Afshar, a scholar of Iranian culture and history, used a valuable phrase: ‘the companionship of the pen with the step.’ In other words, whatever you do and wherever you travel, write it down. This is an important matter that many travelers may overlook. Countless valuable pieces of knowledge and information are forgotten simply because they were never recorded.
As time moves forward and technology advances, the ways of documenting experiences become broader and more diverse. But let us go back seventy years, to a time when recording film or sound and publishing texts was far more difficult than it is today. Seventy years ago, two courageous and adventurous young Iranians set out on a journey. Today travel is associated with pleasure, but not long ago it was often synonymous with danger. Seventy years ago, Abdollah and Issa Omidvar left Iran and stepped into an unknown world. Unlike most travelers of that era who headed west, they set out toward the east on motorcycles.
If the Omidvar brothers had not combined the pen with the step and produced documentaries, books, and articles about their journey, today we would only have vague memories of this remarkable adventure. With great care and effort, they documented the details of their travels so that today we can feel ourselves accompanying them step by step. At a time when learning about distant parts of the world was difficult, the Omidvar brothers made this knowledge accessible to Iranians. Many people watched their documentaries in cinema halls. Their travelogue, alongside their films, stands as a lasting and valuable work by Iranian adventurers—one whose value continues to grow over time. Issa Omidvar has now left us, but his memory will remain forever. He was a great man who used to be present at the Omidvar Brothers Museum in the Sa’dabad Complex on the first Sunday of every month, answering the questions of travel enthusiasts.
He would tell those interested in travel: ‘We did not become world travelers overnight; we spent years researching and traveling within Iran before embarking on a global journey.’

عیسی امیدوار که به همراه برادرش عبدالله نخستین جهانگرادان ایرانی بودند، ۱۹ اردیبهشت در ۹۷ سالگی از دنیا رفت. به همین بهانه مهدی گوهری، پژوهشگر سفرنامه یادداشتی را در اختیار همشهری آنلاین قرار داد. مهدی گوهری، پژوهشگر سفرنامه در این یادداشت آورده است: «مرحوم ایرج افشار، پژوهشگر فرهنگ و تاریخ ایران یک عبارت ارزشمند داشت «همراهی قلم با قدم». اینکه هر کاری میکنید یا هر جا که سفر میروید آن را مکتوب کنید. اتفاق مهمی که شاید بسیاری از مسافران به آن توجه نمیکنند. چه بسیار دانشها و اطلاعات ارزشمند که به خاطر ثبت نشدن به فراموشی سپرده میشوند. هر چه زمانه به جلو حرکت میکند و تکنولوژی پیشرفت میکند، ثبت کردن طیف و تنوع گستردهتری مییابد. اما بیاید با هم به هفتاد سال پیش برویم. زمانی که ثبت فیلم، صوت و انتشار متن بسیار سختتر از امروز بود. هفتاد سال پیش دو جوان ایرانی جسورانه و ماجراجویانه پا به سفر میگذارند. سفری که امروز با لذت مترادف است روزگاری نه چندان دور با خطر هم معنی بود. هفتاد سال پیش عبدالله و عیسی امیدوار دو انسان ایرانی از دل ایران پا به جهانی ناشناخته گذاشتند. آنها برخلاف اکثر مسافران آن روزگار که به سمت غرب حرکت میکردند با موتورسیکلت جهت شرق را در پیش گرفتند. اگر برادران امیدوار، قلم را با قدم همراه نمیکردند و فیلم مستند، کتاب و مقالات از سفرشان تهیه نمیکردند امروز تنها خاطراتی گنگ از این سفر ارزشمند برای ما به یادگار میماند. برادران امیدوار با دقت و تلاش فراوان جزییات سفرشان را ثبت کردند تا ما امروز بتوانیم گام به گام با آنها خودمان را در سفرشان حس کنیم؛ اینکه دوجوان ایرانی با تمام سختیها از ثبت سفر غافل نشدند در زمان خود اتفاق بزرگی بود. آنها جامعه ایرانی را با تجربه زندگی شش ماهه با اسکیموها، از سفر به دل جنگلهای آمازون و زندگی با قبایل بدوی آشنا کردند. در روزگاری که اطلاع یافتن از نقاط دور دنیا کاری دشوار بود، برادران امیدوار این مهم را برای ایرانیان آسان میکردند. بسیاری از ایرانیان در سالنهای سینما به تماشای مستندهای برادران امیدوار مینشستند. سفرنامه برادران امیدوار در کنار مستندهای آنها یک اثر ماندگار و ارزشمند از ماجراجویانی ایرانی است؛ سفرنامهای که با گذشت زمان به ارزش آن هر روز افزوده میشود و گواه این حرف ترجمه این اثر به زبان فرانسوی توسط جان لویی در سال ۱۴۰۲ است. عیسی امیدوار از میان ما رفت و یادش برای همیشه در ذهنها ماندگار شد. مردی بزرگ که یکشنبه اول هر ماه در موزه برادران امیدوار در مجموعه سعدآباد حضور مییافت و به سوالات علاقهمندان پاسخ میداد. او به علاقهمندان سفر میگفت «ما یک شبه جهانگرد نشدیم بلکه سالها تحقیق و سفرهایی در ایران داشتیم تا پا در سفری جهانی گذاشتیم» امروز دیگر برادران امیدوار در کنار ما نیستند اما همراه کردن قلم با قدم در سفرهاشان، آنها را تا ابد برای تمام علاقهمندان به سفر ماندگار کرده است.»
